Does health insurance cover going to the gym? ›

Most commercial health insurance plans offer fitness incentive programs, and those perks sometimes include free gym membership. If your plan won't fully reimburse your membership, you may still be able to get a low-cost or discounted gym membership or other fitness benefits.

Generally, gym and health club memberships, along with exercise classes (like Pilates or spinning), can't be covered by FSA funds.

At its core gym insurance protects your business so that in certain situations, the insurance will cover the costs. Gym insurance is a combination of policies, like general liability coverage, and worker's compensation. Your specific policy really depends on your facility, what you offer, and how big your gym is.

The cost of the gym membership must be reasonable and necessary to qualify as a deductible expense. Its sole purpose must be related to its business activities. For example, if you are a personal trainer, a fitness instructor, or a coach, it may be possible to deduct the cost of your gym membership.

For most locations, you can visit your home club in person to cancel your membership or send a written notification via mail to your home club requesting to cancel. Some members may also be eligible to cancel their membership online based on their membership type and the location of their home club.

Gym fees and fitness-related expenses are generally not deductible.
