  • Author(s): Bush, Stephanie Lynn | Advisor(s): Caldwell, Roy L | Abstract: The deep sea is the largest habitat on Earth and holds the majority of its' animal biomass. Due to the limitations of observing, capturing and studying these diverse and numerous organisms, little is known about them. The majority of deep-sea species are known only from net-caught specimens, therefore behavioral ecology and functional morphology were assumed. The advent of human operated vehicles (HOVs) and remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) have allowed scientists to make one-of-a-kind observations and test hypotheses about deep-sea organismal biology. Cephalopods are large, soft-bodied molluscs whose defenses center on crypsis. Individuals can rapidly change coloration (for background matching, mimicry, and disruptive coloration), skin texture, body postures, locomotion, and release ink to avoid recognition as prey or escape when camouflage fails. Squids, octopuses, and cuttlefishes rely on these visual defenses in shallow-water environments, but deep-sea cephalopods were thought to perform only a limited number of these behaviors because of their extremely low light surroundings. The Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institutes' ROVs were used to determine whether or not deep-sea squids are limited in their behaviors compared to their shallow-water relatives. First, eighteen species of deep-sea squids were observed to release ink when encountered by an ROV (Chapter 2). Ink release was observed from the...

FAQs

What is the key part of a cephalopod's defense? ›

How do cephalopods defend themselves? ›

Cephalopods have amazing defense mechanisms. They can change color, texture, and body shape when necessary. They are also able to make their own “smoke screens” by releasing an ink-like secretion into the water. This confuses the enemy and allows time for a clean getaway.

What are several defense mechanisms exhibited by cephalopods? ›

Over time, many cephalopods evolved to lose or reduce their shells, replacing them with other defense mechanisms. These adaptations allow them to quickly change color, jet-propel themselves away from danger, or disappear in a cloud of ink.

What is the defense system of a cephalopod? ›

Humoral and cellular mechanisms of defense have been described for cephalopods, a relatively advanced group of mollusks. Typical of other mollusks, cephalopod agglutinins are the most documented component of humoral immunity.

What is the key on defense? ›

It is assessed when a member of the defending team spends more than three seconds in the free throw lane (also called the key, the 16-foot lane, or "the paint") while not actively guarding an opponent.

What is the defense mechanism of the octopus? ›

Octopuses use several different strategies to evade predators—they camouflage themselves by quickly changing their skin color, they make colorful displays or eject ink to startle or confuse potential predators, they squeeze into small crevices to escape, and they quickly propel themselves through water.

What is the escape mechanism of cephalopods? ›

The jet propulsive escape response of squids is produced by the rapid expulsion of water from the mantle cavity through a funnel aperture (Fig. 2; O'Dor, 1988; Packard, 1969; Young, 1938).

What body part do octopus use to protect themselves? ›

Octopuses can squirt ink and detach their tentacles to protect themselves from predators.

What method of defense do octopus share with other cephalopods? ›

Typically octopus and squid produce black ink, but ink can also be brown, reddish, or even a dark blue. Octopus and Squid use their ink as a defense mechanism to escape from prey. When feeling threatened, they can release large amounts of ink into the water using their siphon.

What is the defense mechanism of the cuttlefish? ›

Like its close relatives, the squid and octopus, the cuttlefish is equipped with an ink sac that can help it make a last-ditch escape from predators that hunt by sight. The cuttlefish can eject its ink in two ways. One way creates a smoke screen behind which the animal can escape perceived danger.

How do cephalopods avoid predators? ›

Along with a jet-driven escape, a widely used strategy for predator evasion in cephalopods is camouflage (Barbosa et al., 2008; Hanlon and Messenger, 1996; Messenger, 2001).

What are 2 defense mechanisms used by squid? ›

When hiding from predators doesn't do the trick, a squid has several other defense mechanisms at its disposal. It can startle an oncoming predator, physically attack it, move erratically to confuse it, play dead, flee, or, in the case of the deep-sea squid Octopoteuthis deletron, sever ties with a body part.

What protects cephalopods? ›

Early in their evolution, cephalopods relied on the sturdy protection of shells, but over time many eventually lost the outer shell and instead relied on new adaptations like heightened intelligence, a talent for hiding, and strong, flexible arms.

What are 2 methods of escape used by cephalopods? ›

Most cephalopods can swim using jet propulsion, the pulses generated by the muscular walls of the pallial cavity. Some also use undulating movements of paired fins at the distal end of the mantle for swimming. Many can expel a cloud of ink to create a "smoke screen" to assist escape.

What is the key to defending the Wing T? ›

The absolute key to the defending the Wing-T is to line up properly and do NOT try and do too much. The Wing-T is an offense of multiple formations and deception with a relatively small number of plays. We focus from the start to line up properly and that comes with built in checks for your defense.

What kind of nervous system do cephalopods have? ›

Cephalopods have the largest and most complex invertebrate nervous system. During evolution, the “brain” was assembled through the fusion of a number of molluscan ganglia to form lobes connected to the periphery by many nerve trunks regulating the arms, viscera and other parts of the animal's body.

What are the characteristics of a cephalopod? ›

Cephalopods are characterized by a completely merged head and foot, with a ring of arms and/or tentacles surrounding the head. The arms, tentacles, and funnel are all derivatives of the foot.
