Pleasants County Leader - September 21, 1906

Arthur A. Lamoreux

Arthur A. Lamourex died at home in this city on Monday evening Sept. 17, of typhoid fever, aged 36 years. He had been ill only a brief time. His fine physique and temperate habits were expected to win for him against the assault of the insidious disease, but these were unequal, and his spirit passed out into the Great Unknown prepared for higher and greater things.The funeral was held from the M. E. Church South at 2 o'clock on Thursday afternoon, and was largely attended. Interment in the St. Marys cemetery.

His death is particularly sad. Just at a time in his life, by hard work he had accumulated enough of this world's goods to be comfortably situated, he was cut off from his family consisting of a wife and four little children.

The deceased was born in Luzern county, Pa., Nov. 1, 1876 and came to this city about 12 years ago.

On January 21, 1897(?) He was united in marriage with Minnie Dotson of this city.

Body identified as Steven Lamp

Staff Reports ST. MARYS - The body found Oct. 25 beneath the West Virginia side of the Hi Carpenter Bridge has been positively identified as Steven Allen Lamp. The West Virginia Medical Examiner's Office confirmed Monday the skeletal remains were Lamp's, said Pleasants County Sheriff Larry Barnhart.There was nothing in the medical examiner's report to indicate foul play, Barnhart said. It appears Lamp had fallen from the bridge, which is about 60 feet high, he said. "Some of the broken bones indicate that's what happened," Barnhart said. "The breaks in the bones were the type that would happen from a fall of that magnitude." Barnhart said there is no way to tell if the fall was accidental or intentional. "I think it was just a very unfortunate accident," Barnhart said.The sheriff's department hasn't received a copy of the medical examiner's report, but received a phone call identifying the body. It may take several weeks before a copy of the report is available, Barnhart said. Lamp's brother reported him missing in July. Family members were not available for comment Monday evening. The complete skeleton was discovered late last month by a juvenile digging for marbles, said Harvey Hatfield, Pleasants County medical examiner. The area where the remains were found is covered with five-foot high brush and weeds. Access to the area is difficult because of steep terrain, thick brush and a creek. Lamp, 53, of Spring Street in Parkersburg was last seen June 4 at the St. Marys Motel, said Sgt. John Young, Parkersburg police detective. He was released from Camden-Clark Memorial Hospital the night of June 3 where he had been admitted earlier in the day because of pain in his legs, he said. He took a cab from the hospital to the Econo Lodge on Seventh Street where he stayed the night of June 3. Detectives later discovered that Lamp then took a cab from there to the St. Marys Motel, where he checked into a room. Young said it is unclear whether Lamp left the hotel the night of June 4 or the next morning. Rick Lamp said his brother did not check out of the St. Marys Motel, but left the key in the room and then disappeared.

SUSAN LAMP - St. Marys Oracle

Susan* Lamp, deceased, was born near Harrisburg, Penn., March 27, 1794. Died at her home, W. S.** Wilson's on Rock Run, January 1, 1891, aged 97 years, 9 months and 4 days. Her remains were interred at Pine Grove January 3rd. She was married to Jacob Lamp at the age of 20, March 14, 1814, in Belmont County, Ohio. She was the mother of ten children, nine of whom are living. About the year 1834 she professed religion and united with the Christian Church, and lived a faithful Christian life, until her Savior said: "It is enough, come up higher." And now ripe in years, at peace with all mankind, and with her God, she lies quietly down upon her couch, and fall asleep in Christ.

Sleep they last sleep, free from care and sorrow,
Rest where none weep, till the eternal morrow;
Though dark waves roll o'er the silent river,
Thy fainting soul Jesus can deliver.
Life's dream is past, all its grief, its sadness,
Brightly at last, dawns a day of gladness;
Under the sod, earth receive our treasure,
To rest in God, waiting all his pleasure.
Tho' we may mourn these in life the dearest,
They shall return, Christ, when thou appearest;
Soon shall thy voice comfort these now weeping.
Bidding rejoice, all in Jesus sleeping.

In Memory of O.C. (Carl) Langford

September 4th our husband and father departed this world. There is an emptiness in our hearts this week and believe that these verses, intended to honor him, will help us to come to terms with our loss as well as to be our final gift of love to him.

Dad loved his family above all else. He worked hard to provide for our needs often times denying his own. He loved working on the farm by often times had to work other jobs to make ends meet. For that sacrifice Dad we Thank You.

Dad was a man who lived his entire life with high moral and ethical standards in all things. There was never a time when I heard anyone say that he had been dishonest with them in any way. For this example we Thank You.

It was a joy spending time with him because you could be assured that you would feel better for having done son. He had a unique way of looking at every one of life's situations and seeing a solution; usually expressed with such wit that would make you wonder why you hadn't thought of it yourself. His sense of humor has seen each of us through some difficult times in our lives. For the wisdom you delivered, oftentimes as a joke, we Thank You.

In recent years he had not regularly attended church, however, he did possess a deep abiding faith and trust in the Lord. As a testament to his faith, a couple of years ago he donated property to a group of people desiring to build a church in the community. That little country church is being built today in the same spot where his father taught Sunday School many years ago. The final testimony to his true faith and trust in the Lord came on a day immediately preceding his death when two of his daughters were standing at his bedside with tears in their eyes, as he struggled to speak he said, "I'm free, I'm free and don't cry." What more comfort could he have given us? Even at that juncture in his struggle for life he wanted to comfort us. For your generosity Dad we Thank You.

Our lives are better for having known you both as husband/father and friend. In recent months he could be quoted as saying, "If I had my life to live over again I would just do more of the same." Realizing that the end of life was near for him, he was pleased and at peace with the way he had lived. That presents quite a challenge for each of us to live in such a way that when our time comes to leave this world we will be able to summarize our lives in just that way. For that memory and the comfort it brings us today, Dad we Thank You.

As long as God sees fit to leave us on this earth we will miss you but we are thankful that the struggle is over for you and that today you are free.

Lovingly submitted by: The Family of O.C. Langford.

Burned to Death

The little baby boy, between the age of one and two years, of Mr. and Mrs. Dennis Lucas, was burned to death last Friday afternoon, about 4 o'clock, at their home on Gravel Hill. The mother left the unfortunate babe and its four year old brother while she went for a pail of water to a well near by. The child was asleep and she threw a lace curtain over it to prevent the flies from disturbing its rest, and the older child in some manner, got hold of some matches and fired the curtain. The child was frightfully burned about the head and body, and died of the shock about 11 o'clock the same night.

The mother is distracted with grief because of the tragedy. The funeral occurred Sunday afternoon.
